Not long ago we came across a really helpful Dr Oz episode that focussed on losing weight for your body shape. If you find it hard to lose weight, and let’s face it the older we get the harder it is, understanding your body shape is the key to your weight loss success. There are two major body types–bigger on the top or bigger on the bottom. Fat distribution actually shifts as we age, and as your shape changes you need to eat differently. Dr Oz breaks it down further into Apple, Pear, Hourglass and Box.

According to The Daily Mail Site -: The seven most common body shapes are neat hourglass (19.3 per cent) , apple (16.7 per cent), pear (16.6 per cent), rectangle (10 per cent), lean column (8.9 per cent) and inverted triangle (8 per cent)
The comprehensive survey of 18,000 women reveals that most identify themselves as a full hourglass shape, more than any other shape. The seven most common body shapes are full hourglass (20.5 per cent), neat hourglass (19.3 per cent) , apple (16.7 per cent), pear (16.6 per cent), rectangle (10 per cent), lean column (8.9 per cent) and inverted triangle (8 per cent).
What Body Shape Are You? -:
Where you ‘wear’ your weight will help you work out how to eat for your body shape which in turn will fire up your metabolism and according to Dr Oz, turn your body into a fat burning furnace! Firstly let’s look at some of the identifying factors that you can learn to recognise so you have a better understanding of your shape.
What it means if you’re bigger on top:
- Your fat migrates to your belly and above.
- You’re an android.
What it means if you’re bigger on the bottom:
- Your fat settles downward to your butt and legs.
- You’re a gynoid.
What to Eat if You’re an Android Body Type
- At least one serving of vitamin C at every meal.
- Eat cold-resistant carbs at every meal.
- Cook with coconut oil.
How It Works -:
Vitamin C helps reduce levels of cortisol, which causes fat to migrate up to your middle. One study has shown that vitamin-C deficiency was associated with 131% increased chance of belly fat.
Contrary to popular belief, oranges are not the highest source of vitamin C. The best sources of vitamin C can be found in one-cup servings of the following foods: papaya, bell peppers, broccoli, strawberries or kale. Eating these foods raw will help you get the highest amount of nutrients, but it’s fine to have them frozen and cooked, too. What’s most important is that you’re getting this nutrient.
When food is cooled, resistant carbs can form, which can help break down belly fat. When the temperature is altered, the food is changed and digests differently. Cold-resistant carbs are resistant to digestion in your small intestine, meaning they don’t get absorbed and can increase your body’s fat-burning ability by 20%.
Work cold-resistant carbs into every meal by having a one-third-cup serving of any of the following foods: potatoes, white beans, barley, long-grain rice and lentils.

Understanding the Apple Body Type -:
Are you the Apple Shape? You have the appearance of being round and slightly wide around the waistline due to being overweight. This could also be as a result of child birth. Your waistline lacks or has no waist definition. Bust, waist and hips are very close in measurements. You have a large bust for your frame and carry most of your weight around your mid section. You may have slim legs, hips and bottom.
Understanding The Pear Body Type -:
If you have a Pear Shape you are likely to have a more triangular body. You have a well defined waist, narrow or sloping shoulders. Your bust and shoulders are proportionally narrower than your hip-line. Your thighs and maybe your butt might be full and rounded. You carry most of your weight on your hips, thighs and bottom. Usually this body type has a slender neck and shoulders and a flat tummy.
Comparing the Apple and Pear Body Shape -:
The Infographic above shows the clear distinctions between the Apple body type on the left and the Pear Shape on the right. Most women will be able to immediately identify with one or the other before narrowing your shape further.
Over on the Trinny and Susannah site, they break body shapes down even one step further. This is helpful particularly when you are trying to work out how to dress for your body shape.
They have added in additional shapes like Brick, Column, Vase, Cello, Skittle, Bell, Goblet, Lollipop, Cornet on top of the traditional Apple, Pear, Hourglass.
Dr Oz also says that antioxidants in green tea help encourage your body to get rid of fat cells and that by adding lemon juice it supercharges the belly melting ability. By adding lemon to your green tea, you will pull out six times more antioxidants and chemicals that the green tea provides.
In order to make green tea lemonade, you must first make green tea and let it steep for 20 minutes to get the full benefit.

There are some great tips including to sleep your way to slim by having 8 hours of rest a night and also not restricting your calories too much. It’s true when they say that you are likely to binge later in the day if you restrict yourself. In many cases eating less, more often can keep your metabolism turbo charged.
Did you know that by making some simple changes daily, you can lose as much as a pound a day? It’s true, this can be you! By drinking 2 glasses of water that equate to 500ml each before every meal, this can result in a substantial loss of 10 pounds over the next 12 weeks. This coupled with other changes that you make can really assist you to achieve your weight loss goals and with minimum impact to your world.
Some of the other tips that you may want to look at including are getting to bed earlier, eating your nightly meal prior to 6pm, walking briskly for 30 minutes a day and controlling your portions. Having 5 small meals a day is better than 3 heavy meals. A portion control tool is a great inclusion too.
