MAJOR Crash police are trying to find a woman who was seen with a man when he was hit and killed by a car at Kilburn last night – but then vanished.
The woman fled after the man, 42, was struck on the eastern side of Churchill Rd about 8.15pm. He died shortly afterwards in the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Police said they know the identity of the 40-year-old woman and believe she did not contribute to the man’s death.
But they are baffled as to why she left the scene before emergency workers arrived.
“We know who she is but we’ve had trouble locating her,” Detective-Inspector Peter Duance said.
“She seems to be of no fixed address and we just need to speak to her because she was a witness (to the fatality).”
The driver of a light-coloured Datsun Sunny sedan, which was travelling south when it hit the man, stopped and has been interviewed by police, who said he was not intoxicated.
However, the man could not tell police if the pedestrian was walking across Churchill Rd, near Brunswick St, or lying down when they collided.
Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward and clear up the puzzling details leading to the man’s death.
He was the fifth pedestrian to die on SA roads this year compared with seven at the same time last year.
“We’re appealing for anyone who witnessed the fatal collision or saw a man and a woman walking together on Churchill Rd before the crash to come forward,” Det-Insp Duance said.
“We had a spike in road deaths from April 10 to 21 last year – we had 13 people die on SA roads – and we certainly don’t want to repeat that.”
The man’s death takes the state’s road toll to 29, compared with 31 at the same time last year.
