Deception at Kensington Park

Police are investigating an incident of deception that occurred at an IT business at Kensington Park on Monday 17 October.

At about 11.45am a man entered the Magill Road premises and offered for sale 10 iPhones, 4 laptop computers and 5 iPads.

A price of $7,000 was agreed, with the suspect insisting that it was a “cash only” deal.

The victim agreed and went to his bank where he withdrew the cash.

The victim later met the suspect back at the Magill Road premises where the transaction took place.

At the time of the transaction the victim received a phone call and the suspect counted the money.

The suspect then left after bags containing goods were handed over.

About 30 minutes later the bags of goods supposedly containing the electrical items were checked and found to contain, newspaper, flour and sugar.

Police warn the community of this scam taking place; not to deal with persons offering iPhones and iPads at greatly discounted rates; and to report any such behaviour to police immediately.

Police are investigating links between this and a similar incident that occurred at Smithfield on the same day.

Police investigating deception at Smithfield

Police are investigating an incident which occurred at Smithfield on Monday 17 October.

At 6pm male suspect attended a restaurant on George McCullum Road business posing as a sales representative for Apple and producing what appeared to be a genuine Apple ID card.

This suspect offered a number of Apple I pads and I phones for sale at a discounted rate for a bulk purchase.  After verifying that the goods being offered were genuine, the victim  negotiated a price ($6000) for 5 x I Pads and 10 x I phones.

The suspect then packed up the stock into their original packaging and returned to his car stating he was getting his receipt book, taking the packaged goods with him.

When he returned a short time later with identical packages, the transaction took place with the victim taking possession of the bags which he believed contained the I Phones and I pads he had just bought.

When he checked the bags later, he found that they contained bags of corn flour and Chinese newspapers.

The suspect is described as being of Mediterranean appearance, olive complexion, about 30 – 35 years of age, 165cm tall, stocky build with short brown to grey coloured hair.  He had a heavy European accent and was wearing a ‘POLO’ brand blue and purple striped shirt.

No vehicle was sighted on this occasion.

Police warn the community of this scam taking place; not to deal with persons offering I Phones and I Pads at greatly discounted rates; and to report any such behaviour to Police immediately.
